I’m not sure where the summer is going! It’s already June 16th and we’re coming up on father’s day. I’ve been looking at the calendar and I can’t come up with one weekend that we aren’t busy. I need some sort of relief, aka vaca, break, solace, etc.
We spent last summer on the road quite a bit! My kids were fabulous and were ready to jump in the car in a heartbeat. I think I just about drove the tires off of that Bonneville last year. We head north quite a bit. I can’t seem to get away from the Black Hills…they just call my name. It probably has something to do with my daughter living just south of the SD border in Chadron, my sister-in-law, niece, & nephew on the southern edge of the hills, or maybe the fact the Pa has owned land there for years. I’m not sure BUT I think I hear my name now! Traveling in Nebraska, I’ve heard, can be boring? What? I would NOT call the Sandhills boring! I would say it’s quite a distance between bathrooms, which can be a challenge with kids. AND since we’re talking boring, I decided my last questionnaire worked so well that I tried it again. I asked my friends on my personal FB page “Is there something you pack special to occupy or entertain your kids on long excursions?” I always pack a bag full of Hot Wheels, crayons, coloring books, and notebooks but I think the best investment I’ve ever made for our long trips has been a dual screen portable DVD player. Some parents may think the technology should be left at home but trust me when it’s just me and I’ve got minimum 5 hours to travel on the first day, I’m not interested in hearing “are we there yet?” 1036 times from my 6 year old. As a result of my survey, here are some other suggestions that parents said they would take on a trip with their children. The TOP 10 “What do you do or take on a trip with your kids to keep them busy?” 1. I spy Nebraska style AKA “the windmill game” or “the license plate game”. 2. A “busy” bag similar to my own. 3. Tablet/iPad 4. Books 5. Music & sing along in the car. 6. Wipe Off Marker Board 7. Mad Libs 8. Disposable cameras? (Can you still get those?) 9. One mother played “the alphabet game” & the child that found an object that began with that letter received a Skittle or M&M. Although she did mention you may not want that much sugar while you’re cooped up in the car. 10. Portable board games such as “Battle Ship” & “Bingo”. (I’ll have to look for Bingo!) I won’t share some of the onry things they said to take on a trip with the kids. That may get me in trouble. Happy traveling, I think I’m going to go pack my suitcase AND my “busy bag”!!
